Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator

BMI expresses the relationship between a person's weight and height. It is calculated as weight in kilograms, divided by height in meters squared:

weight(kg)/height(meters)²

During our research we noticed a few other formulas, but we chose this BMI formula because it was the one used in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.

To use the BMI calculator below, enter your weight in pounds and your height in feet & inches and the necessary conversions to kilograms and meters will be performed during the calculation.

WEIGHT in Pounds? ---------- HEIGHT? Feet -- Inches

In the First Federal Obesity Clinical Guidelines (released June 1998), overweight was defined as a BMI value between 25 and 29.9; and obesity was defined as a BMI value greater than or equal to 30. According to this report, an estimated 97 million adults in the United States are overweight or obese.

NOTES:
  • weight(kg) = weight divided by 2.2
  • height(meters) = height divided by 39.37
